The History of Easter

Easter E-cardEaster is the Christian celebration commemorating the resurrection of Christ, but as with many other Christian holidays, Easter has some roots in pagan celebrations that have nothing to do with Christianity.

The Ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with a festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and springtime, Easter. This occurred around the same time as the Christian observance of the resurrection of Christ, so the festival was slowly altered to make it a Christian celebration.

This year Easter is celebrated on Sunday, April 8. In 325 A.D. Emperor Constantine issued the Easter Rule whish states that Easter will be celebrated on the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox, which is always on March 21. Easter is now always celebrated on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.
