Hanukkah Traditions
-Menorah- One candle is lit for each night of Hanukkah. A single candle in the middle, known as the Shamash or ‘servant’ is used to light from. Though the candles are inserted from right to left, they are lit from left to right. Blessings are recited each night before they are lit.
-Oil- As a tribute to the ingredient that burnt the candle for eight days, oil is used in certain fried foods. Latkes (potato pancakes), are made from grated potatoes and combined with a blend of onions, flour, and eggs and then fried in vegetable oil. Latkes are best served with apple sauce or sour cream on the side.
Sufganiyots are jelly doughnuts without the hole. They are dropped in hot oil, in no particular shape or size. The doughnuts are then topped with powdered sugar or cinnamon.
